Children are animal lovers by nature. They instinctively oppose hunting; they are horrified to learn bacon comes from cute pigs; they bristle at the insistence they dissect frogs.

We adults condition that nature out of kids. We force our rationalizations onto them: Hunting is necessary to maintain healthy animal populations; we must eat meat to grow strong, plus the animals are killed humanely; dissection is the only way to learn life sciences (and when that doesn’t work, students are shamed or punished into compliance).

The kindest thing we can do is nurture our kids’ affinity for animals. Using these websites to explore other species is a great start.
